Neighborhood-wide holiday celebration in Columbia’s historic Five Points
By Kirstie Boone
Five Points will celebrate its 100th anniversary on Dec. 3 during A Starry Night, a free neighborhood-wide holiday celebration. This will be the third annual A Starry Night event hosted by Five Points. Five Points, home of 52 bars and restaurants, 41 retail shops, 44 service locations and 12 annual events, has served as downtown Columbia’s original village neighborhood for shopping, dining, entertainment and personal services since 1915. During an evening full of holiday cheer celebrating the impact and importance of Five Points, businesses will be staying open late and offering sales, snacks and drinks to guests.
The night will be full of music, performances and good cheer. Unbound Dance Company will hold pop-up performances, and the Shandon Baptist Youth Group and The Benedict Choral Group will both provide roaming choral performances. Highlights of the evening will also include a holiday themed photo booth, complimentary horse carriage rides and rides from South Carolina Pedal Parlor. Stop by the infamous Five Points fountain for a cup of hot chocolate and to hear holiday music provided by a DJ. Retailers such as Revente, Bohemian, Sid and Nancy, The OOPS! Co. and Vestique will offer discounts and refreshments. Restaurants and bars such as Saluda’s and CJ’s will be offering special deals to customers. Santa will even be in attendance, and you can stop by and visit him at the Hootie Monument.
One special event that will be held this year during A Starry Night is the Paint 5 Points Champagne Bash and Art Auction, held at The Gourmet Shop on Saluda Avenue. This event begins at 6:30 p.m. and includes a tasting of six champagnes and a commemorative, engraved champagne glass. The champagne tasting will include Roederer Estate, Veuve Clicquot and Ruinart Blanc. An art auction will also take place starting at 9 p.m. Ten of the Midlands’ most established artists have created works of art during live, outdoor sessions throughout fall. Their art was created with Five Points scenery, businesses and passerby as inspiration. These artists include Stephen Chesley, Colin Dodd, Jung-Mei Dodd, Jeff Donovan, Mary Gilkerson, Susan Lenz, Laurie McIntosh, Brian Rego, Blue Sky and Edward Wimberly. Tickets for the Paint 5 Points Champagne Bash and Art Auction can be purchased at FivePointsColumbia.com.
Start your holiday festivities on an exciting note at A Starry Night, celebrating Five Points’ 100th anniversary!
